Claret Jug @ Oulton Hall

This was possibly the worst restaurant meal that I have ever eaten. I have never before felt the need to write a review after a meal, but I was so shocked by the quality of the meal (and it was expensive) that I feel obliged to.

The restaurant surroundings are pleasant, but I did have to keep my coat on throughout the meal as it was very cold in there. The staff were friendly and generally efficient but the positives stop there.

I ordered a Caesar salad to start with (7.95£) and I was horrified to receive a plate with four withered salad leaves - they were actually brown underneath. There were four anchovies on top of it (the menu made no mention of anchovies) and a few parmesan shavings and rock hard croutons.

My main was a burger and chips - the meat tasted funny and the whole thing was totally underwhelming for the 14 pounds or so it cost. Friends who ordered chicken or fish dishes just received a cold and dry chicken /salmon fillet on a wooden platter with no sauce and a serving of chips.

Funnily enough,no-one ordered a dessert after this. With a couple of bottles of beer each, it came to about £30 a head.

If this food had been served to me in a pub which did a "two meals for eight pounds sort of deal" then I still would have walked away disappointed with the food, but considering this is meant to be a quality establishment linked to a five star hotel charging top of the range (for Leeds) prices, it was nothing short of scandalous.
